If Andy Pettitte is a starting pitcher, why is he reliving?

Question:He came on for the 6th inning of the Red Sox/Yankees game. I thought he was a starter?

It is BS if an adult and a kid are going after a foul ball, the adult should concede and let the kid have it?

Because Joe Torre doesn't know how to manage a bullpen. But his reasoning is that today is Pettitte's "throw day", meaning that he would normally do a pitching session on the side sometime today, but Torre figures he might as well do it during the game.

What does it mean when a pitcher is described as a "gas can"?

Cause Torre is an idiot.

Sometimes starting pitchers will come out in relief - despite the fact that they are still starting pitchers.

Pettite may have had a low pitch count in his last outing, and isn't very tired. The Yankees are about to be swept in this series, and their bullpen is very weak at the moment due to injuries.

Joe Torre probably had him come out in relief tonight because the next opponent they are facing will not be so tough, so he will move his start back. He probably wont have Pettite pitch more than one innning or two, and then depending upon where they are at in the game he will put Rivera in.

In the ALCS when the Red Sox faced the Yankees, Tim Wakefield came out of the Bullpen in relief and gave up his later scheduled start. In the NLCS that same year, Roger Clemens came out of the bullpen and relieved in an extra-inning situation for the Astros.

Don't plan on it becoming a regular thing - but sometimes starting pitchers do pitch in relief.

Which major league player was a member of the Montreal Expos & Toronto Blue Jaysin their inaugural seasons?

Well overlooking the fact that Torre may be an idiot, some teams have their starting pitchers throw on the sideline in the middle day of their rotation (on a 5 day rotation that would be day 3) . "Back in the day" some teams would bring in the pitcher to pitch to one or two batters - figuring if they were going to throw anyhow might as well use them in a game.

The Yankees starting pitching has been so horrible that Torre is intent on bringing this tradition back to life. I don't mind as I have Pettitte on one of my Yahoo fantasy teams.

Roger Clemens?

Well it worked. I think it was mainly to face Ortiz. I didn't think it was that big a deal, pitchers that care about helping their team will do stuff like that. Primadonnas won't.
