Can someone please explain to me why in baseball some foul balls are considered strikes?

well here's the thing.
In baseball when somone already has 2 strikes on them and they hit a foul.. they still get to keep hitting.. But if the person has one strike and hits a foul.. it's a strike because they hit the ball. Anytime that bat crosses the plate.. it's considered a strike.
