Baseball rule question?

Question:I was on first base, and after the pitch was delivered, I shuffled a little to 2nd base. The catcher then threw the ball to 1st base to try to catch me napping but I moved back to first. Now, the question of interference: The first basemen's mitt was in my way (as in over the baseline, so I couldnt help it if I had to run into his mitt). Is this interference by the runner or basemen?

First, a lesson in terminology. Interference by the defense can occur only when a defensive player hinders a batter's attempt to hit a pitch. What you're really asking is whether the first baseman obstructed you, as obstruction is an act by the defense that hinders a runner's attempt to reach or return to a base.

As you describe the play, neither you or the first baseman was guilty of anything. This is because you had a right to return straight to the base and because the first baseman had a right to catch the throw from the catcher.

Keep in mind, though, that the first baseman isn't guilty of obstruction as long as he is in the act of fielding the thrown ball. You can't expect him to stand off to the side to give you a path to the base and then dive to catch the ball. (By the same token, you can't expect him to disappear instantly if the throw gets by him and the two of you get tangled up; although he must make a reasonable effort afterward to get out of your way.)

How bad do you hate the NY YANKEES?

No that is just a good tag, a fielder can place his glove in the basepath with the ball. That would be called a tag.

Who is you favorite baseball team? Mine is the A's!!?

Not interference on either person, both players have the right to the bag. As a baserunner, you don't have the Right to a lead off, thus you have the bag. If you choose to lead off or move fromthe bag, the position player can block your attempt to get back to the bag if the throw is there around the same time. Same type of play as at the plate on a throw to home.

Will A-Rod break the single season HR record?

No interference all the way around. As soon as you left the bag both you and th1stbaseman have the same right to the base. He can block the bag actually. So therefore since he can block the bag legally you have to find some way to the base, baseball doesn't frown on any of this with a runners or player interference call.

What Makes Bonds so Much Better?

Ryan R. is right on. i have no clue where the rest of those guys dreamed there stuff up at. Only thing i would either add or clarify on ryan is the fielder has the right to go after the ball but does not have the right to block the base without it.
