Why don't baseball tarps cover the entire field (grass and diamond)?

Question:When it rains the infield is covered with tarp, but why is it only the infield? Why isn't the outfield grass covered as well?

I know some stadiums have systems that allow the water to drain pretty well, but why not just tarp the entire field. When play is resumed, the players wont have to worry about slipping on the grass and etc.

they are just trying to prevent the diamond from getting muddy, its the high traffic area where footing is crutial.

What do u think when you here know batting lance berkman?

why waste natural watering of the grass plus tarps arent cheap and would be to big and bulky to roll over the entire field it would take way to long not worth it

A-Rod VS B. Bonds?

The cost of covering such an expansive area would be tremendous and I think that many team owners are too tight to spend the money. However, with all the newer stadiums going up, you'd think that they would include a mechanized one to do the job.

Who is the one team that has your favorite team's number?

they have metal cleats on so they won't slip in the grass but they can't get traction on mud

Is the miken manaic 484 a double wall or single wall?

The tarp only covers the diamond to keep it from getting muddy. Most Major League outfields have a drainage system underneath them and can take on about 2 inchs of water an hour and still remain playable.

Baseball TRIVIA!! HELP!?

My guess is logistics. A square tarp can cover a square section of field more easily, can be rolled back up more easily, and done repeatedly. Outfields have such different dimensions in every park, especially in the majors. Plus, it is a labor-intensive job. Go to a game in an outdoor park and see how many guys it takes to roll out the tarp just onto the infield. Usually a dozen or more, and they have to move FAST if it's done in-game. Tarping the outfield just isn't practical, or even doable. The closest thing I've seen to a good solution is when a helicopter gets really close to the grass, and the sheer force of its prop can speed along the drying of the grass, but even that's not really efficient. Parks nowadays have, like you stated, drainage systems that work pretty well, but that's about all they can do now.

How has the best record between the Mets and the Yankees ?

And just where would you propose the grounds crew store such a gigantic tarp on the field, and where would you propose the grounds crew dump the water?

The dirt areas need to be covered more than the grass, for obvious reasons.

Who will have the most HRs this year, for the MLB?

I agree with the first answer AND have you ever been to a game that was rain delayed or even where it rained prior? It takes a damn long time to get that tarp on and off the field and it takes A LOT of manpower.

How good is my fantasy baseball team? the only catagory is Home runs?

Cheap owners and lack of imagination. Technically it's an easy problem to solve.
1) install air vents under the bases and in the outfield similar to sprinkler heads
Use a jet engine or two to supply the warm air.
2) the tarp is folded so the log axis runs from home plate to centerfield
3) Pull out tarp using steel cable and electric winches. place more cables and winches where needed or it could be placed on a big cable reel and simply rolled out.
4) Secure to perimeter of field w/ appropriate quick- release hardware
5) Inflate
6) water drains to edges
7)problem solved using off- the- shelf hardware and existing technology.

What current lineup features the most batters hitting over .300 in it?

well, grass needs to be watered. infield sod and dirt needs to stay pretty loose. you don't want the rain patting it down so it's like concrete.
