How much longer is he going to put up with this?
Question:I have absolutely NO confidence in Fernando Rodney. He has lost two games for the Tigers in less than a week. How much longer is Jim Leyeland going to give him a chance? Any thoughts? Seems like he was like this last year, too.
Answers:
1. He's trying to protect Zumaya's arm. That means Rodney has a position as the bridge between starters who don't make 7 innings and Zoom Zoom 8th, TJ 9th. In the case of yesterday, he was the first arm to come out of the pen after TJ light a fire on the mound in the 9th.
2. Rodney has excellent stuff. His change up is amazing, his fastball has movement when he doesn't overthrow, his other pitches are marginal but not very affective.
3. Because he has a good change up, his ineffectiveness stems from bad pitch sequence. Leyland has a hand in that part of his game.
4. Mesa is terrible. He was the backup plan for Rodney this year.
5. The unusual happened yesterday. Rodney came up in the 10th looking at the bottom half of KC's order. He wanted to throw strikes and get out of the inning quick in case he needed to go one more inning for the team. He challenge John Buck, who does not handle the bat well for the most part. Buck got the best of Rodney in that exchange. Tip your cap to him.
In my eyes, Rodney is in his own head too deep to NOT be sent for a rehab stint at Toledo. Also, I think Illitch should pull a Steinbrenner and force Rodney to fix his hat and wear it straight so he doesn't look like a thug on the mound. I would think it's embarassing to have your hat off kilter and ridiculous facial hair, and come out and suck hard.
But the Tigers need to score runs, too. They shouldn't be losing 4-3 unless they are up against the Roy Halladay's of the world. Another well pitched game by Bonderman is wasted :(.

Take it from me - last year was last year. In 2005, Cliff Polite was one of the top 5 relievers in the league. By Mid 2006, he was let go. He never got another gig.Rodney has been horrible. He might not have it. Don't hold on to the past. He should be let go if he is not doing the job.

Looks like Rodeny has a touch of "Lidgeitus". Great stuff but horrible location. You have to be able to locate your pitches and he has not been as of late. Hopefully they can get it turned around.Do you think Alex Rodriguez is on steroids??
