Why is it that only one active player in MLB (the Yankee's Mariano Rivera) wears #42?
Question:Should MLB retire Jackie's number?
Robinson is arguably the one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century. A significant human being, too.
I think retiring his number would serve as a constant reminder, as much as so many of us wish it weren't so, that rascism, sexism, classism, and marginalization still exist in society, and need to be constantly guarded against.

MLB actually did retire Jackie Robinson's number 42 back in 1997, but Mariano Rivera had the number before that so he was allowed to keep it. 1. MLB did retire his number. No player on any team will ever wear #42 ever again. It's officially retired in every ballpark, for every team.
2. Rivera wears it because he was grandfathered in. He was wearing the number, along with a few others including 1995 MVP Mo Vaughn, when MLB decided this. Rivera is the only active player left wearing #42. When he retires, no one else will ever wear it again.
It was retired by MLB 10 years ago today on the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's MLB debut.
