Why is it that only one active player in MLB (the Yankee's Mariano Rivera) wears #42?
Question:Should MLB retire Jackie's number?
Robinson is arguably the one of the most significant sports figure of the 20th century. A significant human being, too.
I think retiring his number would serve as a constant reminder, as much as so many of us wish it weren't so, that rascism, sexism, classism, and marginalization still exist in society, and need to be constantly guarded against.

What are the hobbies of Kahlil Greene (of SD Padres)?
Because he was wearing the number on Jackie Robinson Day in 1997. The commissioner made the rule when MLB retired the number 42, only players wearing the number when the rule was instituted can wear it. So that is why Rivera is the only one wearing it.Jackie Robinson's # 42 is, and has been retired since 1997.
To this day, it is the only number retired by every team in baseball.
Rivera still wears it because he was grandfathered the ability to wear it because he was wearing it when the number was retired. I believe Mo Vaughn wore it as well, but since he retired, Mo Rivera is the only one left.
