Well, you've pretty much answered your own question.Let's add to that, though, that some people seem to think he's exempt because he plays for the Yankees, and some people just refuse to understand anything that not already in their heads. Ballzy's response only proves that point.
If you read his quotes yesterday on MLB, he asked for the number from the start of his career, and did so specifically to honour Jackie Robinson. Rivera not only knows and appreciates Robinson's role in baseball and in the US in general, he also realized that without Robinson and Rickey, baseball would not have the large number of Latino players that is has today, and there almost certainly would be no Asian players in the game, either.
It was open to any player who wanted to wear 42. Besides the Dodgers, the entire Pirates and Astros were going to wear 42 (ppd). Also, some white players like Grady Sizemore wore 42 so I don't see why anyone would care if Mo or Jeter or anyone else wore 42.

I think it's that people just forget, or aren't aware. A lot of people on here might also be younger fans who don't remember that Mariano was wearing 42 at the time they retired it baseball-wide in 1997.And for those who don't remember the grandfather rule, I'm sure it's confusing to hear about Jackie's retired number, then to flip on a Yankees game and see Mo with that number on his back.
