Many, many times.If the third strike is dropped by the catcher, he must corral the ball and tag out the batter-runner. If he can't make the tag, and first base is unoccupied with less than two out, or occupied with two out, the batter-runner can try to advance to first on a dropped third strike. In that case, the catcher must throw the ball to first, for the first baseman to tag out the batter runner. If the batter runner reaches first safely, he still has the strike out against him, and the pitcher is still awarded the k, but the batter runner is safe on either a strike out / wild pitch or a strike out / passed ball. In either case, he's safe, so the pitcher still must get three outs for the inning. If they all come on strike outs, then the pitcher has recorded 4 strike outs in the inning.
