What does it mean when a pitcher is described as a "gas can"?

Question:I've heard a few old timers say it and I get the impression it's not a good thing. What does it mean and where did the saying come from?

A gas can is the opposite of a fireman or ace relief pitcher. They throw gas onto the fire rather than putting out the fire (opponents rally).

I remember 30 years ago the Angels bullpen was so bad they were called the Arson Squad.

Are the cubbies for real? thye have turned it around lately!?

From what I understand, it has something to do with a pitcher with a lot of power - able to throw a great fastball.

A pitcher can be described as having a lot of gas when then have a particularly fast fastball.

Is Jeff Weaver to most overpaid pitcher since Kevin Brown?

A highly-flammable, ineffective reliever who comes into the game and "adds fuel to the fire" instead of quieting a rally.
