Why do baseball players stick their index finger outside the glove?
Question:
Answers:
It helps to secure the glove on the hand. If a ball is thrown/hit hard, it keeps the glove from just sliding off your hand or falling off with the ball.
In baseball when did players stop leaving their gloves at their positions for the other team to use?
The reason why I do that is to provide a little more padding for the index finger knuckle. On a hard line drive or a hard throw, it provides a little more "cushion" so I do not bruise my hand. Batting with a bruised hand can be somewhat uncomfortable. The other reason is for stability. It makes it a little easier to close the glove when catching the ball.
Hope this helps.
