Where did the term "platinum sombrero" come from?

each team can have only so many players on their roster they must get rid of the rest so released mean free to sign with other club sometime they are sent the their minor league team.

Where can I find footage of Chicago cubs fans booing that guy for catching ball in world series?

It means exactly what the word means. They have been "released" from their contract and are therefore a "free agent." Players who have been outright released can go and sign with any club that will have them.

Major League Baseball Question??

Other teams can pick him up.

Hey Yankee fans - did Boston just smoke you three straight?

A player has several options once it appears he will not make the Big League roster. They could offer him a minor league contract and REASSIGN him to the Minors thus transferring his contract to the lesser club. However the player has "The OPTION" of accepting the assignment or refusing his new team..

If a player has been in the league MORE THAN 3 years he can refuse the assignment and ask for his RELEASE in the hope of latching on with another club as a FREE AGENT.

At that point he is "released" from the binds of his contract and is free to sign with a new club.
