The main problem with that age group is that you have too many kids playing because their dad's want them to. The most important thing you can do is show them that baseball is not a chore, then they will want to hustle.Also, hype the team up alot, and give a 'hustle award' after every game (give it to the player that works the hardest, not just the fastest).
Another important thing to do is be a part of the team, not just a coach. When going out to 3rd base to coach, hustle yourself.

I coached basketball ages 10-11 and 12-13. MAKE THEM RUN!! Not just one, all. If one person doesn't hustle, make them all run. I made my guys run 2 suicides at the beginning of practice and told them that running more was up to them. If they played hard and didn't play around they didn't get anymore. If they did, they ran endlessly. Trust me it works. They start to police themselves after a while.Watching TV .is there a way to watch live TV like news from the bay area .?
Sit the ones that do not hustle on the bench. I don't care if they are the best players on the team. If they don't huslte and start sitting on the bench game after game, maybe they will finally get the message and start playing like you want them too. Sometimes you have to take the Bobby Knight effect and use it to your advantage. Coach Knight often used this technique of sitting his best players in order to make a point of no hustle, no play. Apparently being the winningest coach in Div 1 NCAA, the technique must work. Also Coach Paterno at Penn State uses the same technique too.How do you throw a major leage curve ball?
The 9 guys that hustle the most in practice get to start the next game. This may result in a strange starting lineup, but if they're serious about wanting to play, they'll know what they need to do.And if they don't hustle during the game, replace them right then. Being embarassed in front of teammates and the other team will go a long way with a 12 year old.
Don't forget to acknowledge when they do hustle!
All I can say is REINFORCERS. They have to be motivated to hustle and do a good job. Great reinforcers are ice cream after the game or whatever they want, within reason. Let them chose. I highly recommend not to be hard or strict with them. Let them have fun and the reinforcer should be enough for them to shape up. If you start getting negative the kids arn't going to have fun and they are not going to want to play.

That's a tough age, but based on my coaching experience, I'd offer the following:1. Explain to them why they should hustle. Point out major leagurers that still hustle (Varitiek, Pedroia are some guys on the Red Sox that come to mind).
2. I find giving a game ball to a player is helpful. I usually gear the game ball to incent the behavior I'm looking to enhance. In your case, the best hustler gets the game ball.
3. Punishment is tough at that age, but you can give other rewards, in addition to the game ball. For example, during batting practice, the best hustlers bat first or longest.

Well of course they have to want to hustle , if they just simply don't want to most likely they won't.At practice make it into a game, time how long it takes for each player to get from home plate to first base. The average is about 3 seconds, that way they'll want to try and beat their team-mates and get the better time.
