Era is mistakes made by a player usally a pitcher. Whip is Walks versus Hits per innings pitchedEarned run average is one of many ways to determine a pticher's effectiveness. It "normalizes" the number of earned runs allows by a pitcher by presenting the number as a 9-inning average.

Hi there:ERA = Earned Run Average. This is the average number of runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings pitched. ERA does not include runs given up as the result of a defensive error.
WHIP = Walks+Hits Per Inning Pitched. This is the total number of walks plus hits divided by the total innings pitched.

ERA - Earned Run Average(Earned Runs*9) / IP
WHIP - Walks & Hits per Inning Pitched
(BB+H) / IP
Note for ERA: Earned runs are all the runs that were not a result of an error. If an error occurs with 2 outs, all the runs in the rest of that inning are unearned. If a pitcher leaves the game in mid-inning, runners on base as well as the batter (if the pitcher leaves with the count in the batter's favor) are the responsivility of that pitcher.

ERA= Earned Run Average (per nine innings) So if you go 6 innings and give up 2 runs. you have a 3.00 ERA. You want this in fantasy to be as low as you can. A Good ERA is below 4.00WHIP= Walk and Hits per Innings Pitched. So this means how ever many walks and hits per inning. Example. If I walk 3 people and 1 person gets a hit in 4 innings of pitching my Whip is 1.00. (4 innings for 4 hits and walks) A Good whip is under 1.40

Tips from one pitcher to another?
era = earned run average. it indicates how many earned runs a pitcher gives up per 9 innings. it's determined earned runs X nine innings divided by innings pitched, (nine is a constant). SO if a pitcher gives up 3 earned runs in 6 innings, his era is: 3 X 9 / 6 3x9=27/6=4.5. REMEMBER though it is only EARNED RUNS. do not include unearned runs. you will need to look that up too.WHIP is walks+hits / innings pitched. it's a simple ratio that indicates how many walks and hits a pitcher is giving up per inning and is a good reflectiopn of a pitchers overall effectivenss. of course the smaller the number the better, (1 or less). say a pitcher gives up 6 hits and walks 2 and goes 9 innings. 2+6/9 = 8/9 = .89 and thats a great whip! hope this helps!
