Why did San Francisco get the All-Star Game in 2007?

Question:The traditon has been that the NL and AL have alternated cities each year. Pittsburgh, a NL city hosted it in 2006, so why is S.F., another NL city hosting it this year rather than an AL city?

I don't know if there's a really good reason for breaking the tradition, but there was some speculation that MLB did it to help the Giants' season-ticket base. This was the first season where club-level ticket holders didn't have the price protection they'd had as charter season-ticket holders at the new park, and their prices shot up by 40%. So, the thinking is that MLB may have given the Giants the All-Star game in order to keep the fans a little bit happier.

I believe that it had to be something like that, since it's been over 50 years since they broke the tradition. The last time they did it was in 1951 by giving the game to the Tigers, and that was done only because it was Detroit's 250th anniversary celebration.

With the inception of fantasy...?

As much as baseball would have you believe that there is an order to its madness, there's not.

How come the Brewers got an All Star game ahead of cities such as St Louis or the Mets? Selig's connections.
How come the Yankees (my team) will get the All Star game in 2009? Because the $ raised by the last season in that stadium will be beyond belief.

And its the same reason why the Giants have it this year. To help a fledging team save face and try to recuit support when its main villain breaks a great hero's record.

Simply, its politics.

Major League baseball tries to switch between American and National league stadiums each year. However, there are always scheduling problems with these large stadiums because of other events that are held and it is not always possible to achieve exactly what they would like. The bigger issue is to make sure that every major league city has a chance to host the game on a (30) year cycle. The All-Star game brings in a considerable amount of revenue for the city and gives fans the opportunity to see players that they might not have another opportunity to see

Once in a while, MLB hiccups on All-Star game and post-season rotations.

Prior to the wild card, the NL and ALCS home field advantage was to rotate annually between the eastern and western division champtions. But in both 1985 and 1986, the AL East and NL West champions got home field advantage.

That's what this is - a hiccup.

But they do highlight the new stadia over the older ones, which explains, for example, why the game hasn't been at Shea for some time. It has nothing to do with how well a team is doing. It can't, as it's decided 3 years in advance. So it also has nothing to do with the 'roid monster.
