the value would go up if a permanent marker was used and not a pen... pens push down on the card and create an indentation where the signature is made and thus, damage it... markers or pens like sharpies, don't really damage the card so, the value of the card itself is not undermined... but enhanced!Clemens , Should he not have hanged it up 2 years ago ? If you are referring to the 1954 Topps Hank Aaron, unless the card is in REALLY bad shape it is better off unautographed. The reason is that card collector's generally (not always but generally) don't want their cards "defaced" (believe it or not ANY writing on a card, even an autograph, is considered defacing and thus damaging to the cards condition/grade) and Autograph collectors aren't going to pay a premium because it's on the card as opposed to a sheet of paper or an index card. Therefore getting a card autographed does NOT combine the value of the card AND the autograph, but generally makes the item worth ONLY what the autograph is worth. If the card is already beat up then it has little resale value anyway and the autograph can improve it's value, but if it's even a moderately nice card let's say VG or better it isn't worth it!I am a long time memorabilia and card dealer.
