Overhyped by Sparky Anderson or by the media?

THe thing is that today, the media will simply run with anything and everythign that think might be even a minor story, and will blow it entirely out of proportion. That's the structure of the media these days.

But Sparky Anderson could do that on his own.

Then again, I'm in Toronto, and I'm listening to the post-game show. Check the box score from this game, and tell me who you think is being hyped tonight. As to overhyped, that;'s something that only time will tell.

Will the Indians get back into first place?

Mark "the Bird" Fidrych was not a bust. he was great. yea, he only had one great season, but that does not make him a bust. he loved baseball more than life. he only pitched one season in the minors before making the club in '76 and even then he was one of the last guys picked and he was shocked. he was never projected to be a great big league star when he was drafted. he was never hyped until he started pitching in april of 1976. he got off to a great start and turned a lot of heads. he would talk to the ball, pat down the mound with hands, and run out to fielders to shake their hands after a great play (in the middle of his inning!).
he was a goofball. his rookie season when he got off to a great start, fans found out that he was only making 28,000 dollars, but selling out every home start, fans started mailing him money. 5 bucks here, 100 dollars there. but he just gave it back.
when he got hurt the following spring after his great 19-9 rookie season, he was goofing around in the outfield like always and he twisted his knee hopping a fense. he continued to pitch on his bad knee and ended up messing up his shoulder and elbow because he was stressing it so much in order to take pressure off his weak knee. he blew out his elbow and was never able to regain that great all star form. he was magical here in detroit that summer of '76. he is still a living legend here. whenever he visits here, goes to bars or ball games he's mobbed. everyone says hi, asks for autographs, shakes his hand, tell him how great he is. and the whole time, he just smiles and enjoys it. i wish more ball players had his attitude. he loved to play ball. he wasn't about him, he was about his team. he wasn't in it for the money or the fame, he was in it just to play a game he loved.
yea, he may have only pitched one full season, but that season was magic. 19-9, with 23 complete games. he won his rookie of the year and was runner up for the cy young. he would take curtain calls after he was done pitching and he made the game fun to watch. he wasn't a bust. he was and is a hero in detroit. he did amount to something. one great season and 30 years of great memories of that one season. you couldn't say a bad thing about bird if you tried.
