Cubs are the most talented team, yet why are they perfoming so poorly this year?
yogi berra and bill dickey both wore the number and got it retiredWhy isn't brad penny in the starting rotation for the Dodgers?

Since the question has been answered I'll add a tid-bit. Once Jeter and Torre retire all single digit numbers will be retired by the Yankees.
1 Billy Martin 1986
**2 Derek Jeter
3 Babe Ruth 1948
4 Lou Gehrig 1939
5 Joe Dimaggio 1952
**6 Joe Torre
7 Mickey Mantle 1969
8 Yogi Berra 1972
8 Bill Dickey 1972
9 Roger Maris 1984
That number has long been retired my dear. It was worn by Yankee hall of famers Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra.
It will never be worn by another Yankee player again.
Any baseball site includes team pages, and the team pages include rosters. The rosters include jersey numbers.
But you won't find a single-digit number being used by any Yankees player except Jeter. They've all been retired by the team.
Do think Jeff Kent should hang up the cleats or at least become a DH?
Everyones telling you that it is retired twice, but why? When Yogi Berra retired, they did not immediately retire #8.
Bill Dickey started wearing #8 and then they decided to retire the number in honor of Berra.
The Yankees grandfathered the rule allowing Dickey to continue wearing #8 until he decided to stop wearing it or retire.
Dickey had a great career with the Yankees and when he retired, they though it would be an honor to retire the same number for Dickey.
Both Berra and Dickey wore #8, both had great careers, both are in the Hall of Fame, and both have had #8 retired by the same team.
The Yankees are the only team to retire the same number twice with the exception of #42 retired MLB wide.
What happened to Wilfredo Pujols?
