What's the longest at-bat in baseball history?

They don't keep track of such records in Cooperstown: It wasn't considered a big deal until the modern era of pitch counts, explains a researcher at the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library.

They don't have it filed at the Elias Sports Bureau, official statisticians for the big leagues.

But one contender involves Hall of Fame shortstop Luke Appling.

According to Baseball Digest, in a game during the 1940 season the former White Sox great fouled off 24 pitches in one trip to the plate, befuddling Red Ruffing of the Yankees. Chicago was far behind, and Appling, a two-time AL batting champ, decided to have some fun.

"So I started fouling off his pitches," Appling said in the Baseball Digest story. "I took a pitch every now and then. Pretty soon, after 24 fouls, old Red could hardly lift his arm and I walked. That's when they took him out of the game and he cussed me all the way to the dugout."

Then there's Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn. A centerfielder for the Phillies from 1948-59, Ashburn was one of the game's great leadoff hitters. Ashburn once said he fouled off 17 straight pitches in one at-bat before singling.

But when it comes to bat control, Ashburn's most unusual feat may have been hitting a spectator named Alice Roth with a foul ball Aug. 17, 1957 - then hitting her during the same at-bat as she was being carted away on a stretcher with a broken nose.

Which two players are more important then Barry Bonds on the Giants?

probly 20 pitches

Why are the 1st 2 foul balls strikes, but after that they're not? Can you just keep fouling pitches off?

I don't know the answer but I know Alex Cora was with the LA Dodgers about three or four years ago and he took 18 pitches, on the 18th he hit a home run.
