Why is it that the less skilled free-throw shooters in the NBA happen to be the big guys?

For example, Shaq, Ben Wallace, Tyson Chandler, etc.

So Golden State is about to hand Phoenix the NBA Championship. What do yout hink about that?

It's because their feet are bigger, making them that much further back from the free throw line when they shoot..

ok, seriously now. I've heard that many of the poor free throw shooters, (i.e. shaq and wilt) were actually much better in practice than in games. I believe it has to do with rythm. I also believe that face the basket big guys tend to be better than post up, back to the basket players and it has to do with being able to get your rythm on the line. Makes sense that Shaq, Wilt and Ben Wallace are back to the basket type players are terrible, while dirk nowitzki, yao and vlade who were more face up type of players (due to international training), are better ft shooters. It's about rythm and practicing free throws makes it easy to get into rythm...it's a bit harder in a game when you only shoot one or two ever so often, so while a face up shooter can catch a rythm shooting from 18 feet out, players who don't normally take those types of shots will have trouble.

Is it career suicide for local media to support opposing professional teams ?

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Yao Ming is huge and has a high percentage I believe. Alonzo Mourning and Patrick Ewing were good at free throws back in the day as well. I think with some players it may be awkward because their hands are big or that's just not their main focus of their game.

When will Michigan make it back to being one of the NCAA Basketball powerhouses?

Because their hands are so heavy they don't have the shooting touch like the guards do. Besides, guards practice more shooting than the big men. Big men focuses more on their post up moves. somethin like that.

Who is the better player? Odom or Marion?

It's all about practice. Many big NBA players focus on posting, grabbing rebounds, etc, and these are the drills being instilled on them day in day out. Freethrows don't get as much focus as rebounds for the big men. However, there are big NBA players who spend practice time on their freethrows. Ex. Yao...I believe his FT percentage is like 77%.

Has an 8 seed ever beat a 1 seed in the NBA playoffs?

Have u ever played basketball?

Common sense

Big people find it harder to shoot freethrows just like a center shooting a jumpshot? well, why can't center make jumpshots? because THEIR game is not the jumpshot, thus they practice inside. Their Size gives them the EDge therefore they do not focus on the perimeter.

Big Guys find it tough to shoot freethrows simply because they have a post game to their advantage, so they exploit that post game, thus making free-throws is a difficult task because they are used to taking 5 foot shots, layups, and dunking the ball...

just common sense...

With the departure of Jeff Van Gundy, I smell Billy Donovan as the head coach of Rockets next year. What say u

Shooting the ball is more of a guard responsibility. Ever since players are young, they are taught a set of skills. If your smaller, you better be able to handle the ball and shoot the ball. When you are taller, you better be able to rebound and score under the hoop. Its just the way it goes. Guards have an easier time shooting free-throws because it comes more natural to them with their skill set. Bigger guys will practice shooting but not nearly as often as a guard.

Now there is of course rare big players like Dirk who can shoot the lights out. Those are few and far between.

But many times, guys like him were smaller when they were young and practiced things like shooting the ball.

How can I improve my footwork?

The guys you speak of are drafted for a specific reason; to get rebounds and block shots. Everyone on a team has a specific role. Besides, at their height, all they really need to is dunk. It would be nice to see some low post skills It would be nice if they shot a decent free throw percentage, then you wouldn't have hack-a-Shaq or hack-a-Ben. There are some big guys who are decent free throw shooters. Jermaine O'neal, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Brad Miller, Yao Ming, and Amare Stoudamire shoot over 70% from the free throw line.

How is Shawn Marion not on any of the All-Defensive team?

the version i've heard is that since the big guys are taller, they often don't realize how much they're level to the basket and release the ball on a much flatter plane than say a guard would. That decreases the chances of the ball getting in the basket. The biggest example would be Shaq, who often hits his FT off the back of the rim.
