Why do the Lakers suck?
Everyone blames it on Kobe being a ball hog but truthfully they suck whether or not he is scoring 50 or 20 because they never play defense. Proof is the ton of games they've lost when Kobe is under 30 and the games lost over 50. They really need to do something about their defense or they'll never win anything. Look how good Detroit was and the Knicks that Pat Riley coached. They didn't even have a star on Kobe's level but they shut teams down on defense. I really think the Laker team fully healthy should at least be able to win 55.

The problem is that they forgot that this is a TEAM game. As the old saying goes there is no "I" in team, but you can spell Me, Me, Me. Kobe needs to figure this out.
As much as they both wanted to own the ball when Shaq was there they played as a team. Now it is Kobe and 4 other guys.

I watch basketball and I would say that it is a combination of both. You take people out of their game when you shoot the ball that much. I think that his team doesnt know what to do, is he going to pass it to us today or is he going to take all the shots. Do you think he talks about that w/ them prior to the game, or is he just selfish? I really don't think Kobe is the problem. Whether people want to admit it or not, Kobe is a much better all-around player this year than he has EVER been.In my opinion, there are four reasons why the Lakers suck when they really shouldn't be:
1. Lack of defense - They are HORRIBLE at defense.
2. Multiple injuries to important players on the team throughout the season - I don't there has been one time this season when the entire Lakers team has played together. I do believe that they should adapt to that, but no one can say that that doesn't affect team chemistry.
3. Inconsistency - No one on that team other than Kobe produces consistent numbers night in and night out.
4. Phil Jackson not cracking down on them for points 1,2, and 3. - I don't know why he doesn't crack down on these guys. He needs to turn into the old Phil; the one who won six championships.

I agree with you to a point. The Lakers as a whole are not the best. I think defense is a problem, but it's not all the problem. I think that closing big games, and being able to play without Kobe is the other part. Kobe is the most important part of their offense, and when he's gone, or not playing well, the Lakers don't play well. Honestly I'm not a big fan of Kobe, he can play really good, but he needs someone else that will be able to handle being second best.When can teams start trading players this year in the NBA?

I completely agree this team doesn't play consistent defense and that has been a problem for the Lakers not just this season but seasons past as well. Last year they actually didn't do to bad on defense but they still needed a lot of work. This year they're worst. Also though on offense this team is not consistent when comes to sharing the ball and getting it to the open man. While Kobe does deserve some of the blame for this he doesn't all of it. The problem is there are no other scoring options. i watched last nites game on TNT and when kobe was gassed in the 4th, nobody else could step up.
Defense? Yeah they suck. Brand killed them. Magette killed them. Sam I Am killed them in the 4th (my favorite was Smush watching him go baseline for the layup and NO HELP SIDE.
So defense? Yep. But they also need another consistent offensive threat. Odom isn't the answer.

They don't play solid team defense at all. I think they needed to make the Jason Kidd trade and put Smush Parker in the deal and send him and Bynum to Jersey. WIth all the guards that slice up Parker and drive down the lane on him and Bynum is still too young to not foul it tears them up. Kidd is veteran and a tall guard that steals like crazy and doesn't let anyone who feels like it penetrate on him. Having a coveted big man almost doesn't even matter if he's going to be abused by not only his man but by the other teams point guard because no one feels like covering him. They need to settle that badly or else it wont matter what they do. Odom also isn't the best player to pair up with Kobe. He pretty much dissappears when Kobe is on the floor.Now that was an exciting game!?
