In basketball, is it a goaltending violation automatically if the ball hits the backboard before the block?
even when the ball is on its way up? (with a lay-up, for example....)

If the phoniex suns are going to win ?
it that situation i believe the ball would have to be over the rim in order to be goal tending. for instance if i went for a layup and the ball hit the backboard near the edge and you jump up and knocked it into the stands or simply jump up and grab it then that's fine but if the ball hits in the square or anywhere above the rim cylinder and you do something then you that would be goal tending because you are changing the trajectory of the ball.Who will win the NBA Champs this season? Why?
No, the ball has to be coming downward for it to be goaltendingWas kobe bryant the only basketball player to score 60+ in games back to back?
yeah.. if the ball is hit after it makes contact with the backboard that is considered goal tending and only when the ball is on the way back down after a lay-up is it goaltending.. so it can be block on its way up but not after it has hit the backboard or if its on its way down..Should the Lakers trade Kobe Bryant while he still has some trade value?
Nope, if the ball hits the backboard and is still on the way up you can block it... I didn't know this till I saw Greg Oden get a block this way in the NCAA TourneyYou can't block the ball if it hits the backboard first. You may have seen it happen before but it wasnt called because the official missed it.
Should the NBA have a powerful players union like baseball's players union?
In the NBA, yes, definitely. When the ball hits the backboard and is tapped by a defender, the referee must make a goaltending violation call and count the basket. In amateur/international rules however, you can even block the shot after the ball hits the rim and is still within the goal's cylinder.
Who thinks the nuggets have great chances of making it far in the playoffs with the AI and Melo duo?
Goaltending has 4 requirements.1. Must be a try for goal.
2. Must be above the rim.
3. Must be in downward flight.
4. Must have reasonable chance to go into basket.
If any of these four are not met then it is not a goaltend. Nothing about backboards here.
