Sports teams franchise?
besides the warriors, why do some teams name the city where they play at ( boston celtics ) instead of the state ( indiana pacers ) and vice-versa ? is there a criteria for it, or is it just preference?

When r the playoffs and r the heats in it?
Teams name themselves after a city that really is not their city, or a state, when they are located in a very small market in order to draw fans from a much larger surrounding area, or the whole state.Boston is a big city, so no need to call themselves the Massachusetts Celtics.
In baseball, the Los Angeles Angels are actually located in Anaheim. In fact, at one time, they called themselves the California Angels, so they have tried both tricks in hopes of making their franchise seem like they represent a much broader area. They refuse to call themselves the Anaheim Angels.
The first MLB team to name themselves after a state was the Minnesota Twins. They wanted to draw from both St. Paul and Minneapolis, so they chose neither city and called themselves Minnesota.
"America's team"--the Irving Cowboys! Oooooops....... make that the Dallas Cowboys. Have you heard of that saying "everything is big in Texas"? Well, Dallas is bigger than Irving, so they call their team the Dallas Cowboys, even though they are in Irving. Their new stadium will be in Arlington, TX, but it is not likely that they will change their name to the Arlington Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders give orgasms to many men by just hearing that name--I just do not picture them changing their name to the Arlington Cowboys Cheerleaders.
Remember what Andre Aggasi said--"It's all about IMAGE"!
