Is the sport of boxing currently in the path to extinction?
The UFC has gained a lot of ground since its' modest beginnings. Will the day come when people no longer care about boxers because MMA fighting will take all of the attention?
Answers:
In my opinion, that will never happen reason being, boxing has a proven history although tarnished it has survived throughout the decades. The AMA (American Medical Association) has tried to bury boxing with no success. Senators have tried to ban boxing with no success boxing has survived scandals, crusades and even deaths but it is here and still thriving.
I'm a really big fan of MMA and the athletes, they are some of the best fighters I have ever seen. Jens Pulver was responsible for me getting my black belt in BJJ. MMA is still very much in it's infancy stage compared to boxing. Senators have been successful in blocking competitions in certain states, with their reasoning MMA is comparable to "Cockfighting" I know it's absurd, heck I didn't say it, Senator McCain did.
There are two things that will be the demise of MMA.
Number 1; The fights just don't last long enough, Dana White the President of the UFC (Ultimate Fight Challege) recently did a good thing for a quick fix, when Tito Ortiz fought Ken Shamrock in their last fight on PPV he realized the fight ended way too soon, people were very upset about the quick stoppage so he (Dana) steps up and says "We are going to show their third fight for free on Spike T.V in October" quick thinking because he knows that people are getting fed up with shelling out $50 for 2 minute fights. How long do you think Dana will be willing to lose big bucks?
Number 2: There will be a death in MMA, it might not be today or a week from now but it will happen. It has to, you can have all the rules and regulations you want but when someone is taking punches and knees to the head and face with only 4oz gloves something terrible will eventually happen and when it does, you will have every Senator with a cause ready to step up and wipe out the MMA. Is this right? Absolutely not but it will happen, it's just a matter of when.
Lancelot, another thing is MMA fighters do not nearly get paid enough for all their dedication and hard work. The venues are making money selling ringside seats for a $1,000 and general admission for $60 and the Promoters are making money hand over fist with their crappy PPV cards. How come they can't share the wealth with the men who put their lives on the line? Million Dollar paydays are a common thing in boxing, but the most any fighter got for Championship bout in the MMA was $50,000. Give me a break.
Boxing is here to stay.
Thanks for the great question Lancelot.

How much time does it take to learn boxing?
I don't think so but it does have some serious problems that need to be overhauled. UFC is a great sport that I enjoy watching but boxing will always take precedent for me.How can i get my mom to let me box?
I think boxing's about ready to tap.its not going extinct.
were all just waiting for the next great legend to come.
Boxing is experiencing the dillema of Not having real mainstream superstar.
But it cant be extinct, as you can see try channel surfing and you will see many boxing fights in different sports channel.
Yes it is not as popular as before but that doesnt mean that its a dying sport.
You should see the anticpation of a Mayweather Vs. de la Hoya fight, the atmospher of a Pacquiao Vs. Morales Fight.
Plus the mainstream appeal of the Reality Boxing Drama The Contender.
Boxing is still alive very alive.
The reason for the rising Popularity of UFC, because of its more realistic Approach in fighting, and besides this sport is use to be underground. and people love to see something new.
Boxing is just waiting for that crossover Superstar, that will Elevate boxing again to its origianl Throne.
Who won the boxing match between Roy Jones Jr and prince?
Possibly. Boxing has the advantage right now because it's been around longer and has an established history.MMA is purer - doesn't have a gadzillion governing bodies, so everybody knows who the champ is in each division. Plus the MMA fighters are serious bad *s.
Boxing definitely has serious competition.
