Would you consider Meldrick Taylor a great fighter?
Me and my boy had a debate about this last night. I say a good fighter but he was robbed of his biggest win over Julio Cesar Chavez when the fight was stopped when he was ahead with 2 seconds left. But a great fighter? No way! what do you think?

I think he was a very good fighter but i wouldn't call him great. And i agree with Brad M about the stoppage. If you don't respond to the ref's commands what is he supposed to do. All he had to do was tell Steele he was okay and he probably wins that fight. And remember Chavez ko'd him in the rematch and he was also ko'd by Terry Norris. Could've been. Should've been.He was not robbed against Chavez. Steele did the right thing. He asked Taylor if he was okay, and Taylor looked at his corner, not responding to Steele, so Steele stopped the fight.

hard to say. if he hadnt fought chavez when he did,who knows? he was never the same afterwards. as for robbed- he owned the first 5 rounds. made julio look slow & stupid. but did any one notice that from rd6 on, julio beat the soup out of him? that was maybe the most amazing sustained body attack ive ever seen. but lots of people, including certain professional judges, didnt seem to notice. professional judges scoring by amatuer rules- to me thats the real controversyCurtis Cokes vs. Pipino Cuevas who wins?

He was definitely robbed. He pounded Chavez to oblivion. Richard Steele has blown so many fights it's not even funny. But, to answer your question, no he wasn't a great fighter.Cool Breeze ~
A great amateur maybe. A great fighter is defined by how he/she handles himself in victory as well as defeat. If the fighter does lose, does he/she just go away and claim that "they were robbed" or does a truly great fighter go back to the gym and train like never before and come back to beat the fighter who beat them?
Taylor was never the same after his fight with Chavez. Chavez forever damaged Taylor and Taylor just fell a part after his knockout loss.
Taylor was involved in one of the Greatest fights in the history of boxing against a Great fighter, but he will never be mentioned with the "Great" fighters.
