For example, a club cricket captain would need to organise practice session, get involved with selection of a team, organise team to meet for match. Get the team motivated for the game ahead - by using a team talk or talk one-on-one. Toss a coin and use a game plan to try to beat the other team.
They have to decide on batting line-up and bowling options and place and change the fielders for each different situation.
They have to make a contribution as a player, they talk with the umpires and ensure the team play in a correct spirit but play to win.
At our club, they have to attend meetings - orgainse tours and friendlies; ensure clothing is ordered and anything else to help at the club.
But an international captain..they just help with selection, play, motivate and change the bowlers & fielders around a bit!

I have known one captain who took 'all ten' and then did all the washing up at tea, while other captains of my acquaintance have provided teas, scorers, sightscreens, transport etc etc etc so the other 10 players could just turn up and play. At parks level the business of setting the field and changing the bowling is about 10% of the captain's total workload - no wonder so many quit after one year!
