As for usable oil that may be sitting around the house, try Singer Sewing Machine oil.This oil (similar to 3-in-1, but Singer is cleaner) removes easily with "Simple Green" or any mild cleaner.
Don't use car engine oil because it will attract dirt and then turn into glue. The dirt attracted by car engine oil will chew up the chain or gears.
Candle wax can be melted onto the chain. Because it is petroleum and does not attract dirt, this works rather well.
