Your first considerations should be what type of riding and how much is your budget...as well how much riding will you do 10 miles a week possibly building up to 50 miles a week?A comfort or hybrid is a great way to start riding and fairly inexpensive. If you have a weight concern this is also a great way to start as they are fairly stout in the $300-$500 range.
Front shock and a seat post shock for comfort as well an upright riding position.
Go to a few shops and take your time, remember it's YOUR money...test ride as many as it takes to find something you like.

Any bike should do, as long as you can get on it. The thing you should worry about is the seat. Any bike you can buy and replace the seat if you need to. Don't worry about your weight here. All bikes can support any rider's weight these days. The kind of bike you get should depend on the kind of riding you see your self doing. If you want a bike that is durable enough to do on some trials and take the most abuse, get a mountain bike. If you want a bike that can be ridden on the road is group rides or over long distances, get a road bike. If you want a comfortable cruising bike, basically between a road and mountain bike, go for a hybrid.The most important thing is to get a good fit at a shop. Try a bunch of bikes out. Pick one that feels right. You can also change the seat and other assessories to customize the bike for your body and style.

I was over 300 when I started riding & have now lost over 95 pounds so far. My 1st bike was a Cannondale hybrid & I never had any problems with it due to my weight. When I got my road bike last year I was poppin an occasional rear spoke so I got a different wheel with more spokes & haven't had a problem since.Like was said before get your bike from a good shop, they know how to take care of you. The advice about healthy eating was good too. When you get active you need to be sure to eat a balanced diet so you burn the fat off & have good energy.
Just keep getting on the bike, don't push too hard at 1st & you'll do great!
