Can I put “Road Bike Tire” in my “21 inch Mountain Bike”?

Question:I have a 21-inch (Adult Size) Mountain Bike. However, mostly I ride on road, which gives me lots of resistance due to wide tire.

Is there any way to put a "Road Bike Tire" (which is thin) in my Mountain Bike, "Mongoose -DXR" model?

Do I need to replace the Wheel Frame (rim) ?

I disagree completely with mirage on this subject.

You should be able to easily reduce rolling resistance by changing the tyres to a 26"x1.75" slick tyre. This is very inexpensive and will feel much better on the road plus you dont get the vibration of the knobblies either.

You don't need your bike overhauling or bits changing, just get a new set of tyres and you wil feel the difference straight away.

Does anyone have information on the modern bike innvented in 1885?

Most road bike tires are either 27 inch, or more commonly 700c. If your current rims are either of those sizes, you should be able to find a road tire that fits. The width of the rim is important, too. If your current rims are wide, it might not fit. Best thing to do is visit your local bike shop and see if they have something that will fit.

The short answer is "no".

The long answer is yes, provided you are able to find low profile tires for your rims. They are available, but they are not as thin as a typical road bike tire.

I am afraid, however, that no matter what you do to your DXR it will not help the performance much... it is an inexpensive bike, and the tires should be the least of your worries. Instead, I would take it to a bike shop and ask them to completely overhaul it... this means to basically take the bike completely apart and rebuild everything. They can then tweak the bike for best possible performance... which may not be all that much better than what you have now because of the quality of the bike.

How do I adjust my rear derailure?

I have a better idea. Check out bike nashbar. They have high pressure street tires that will fit your bike. Or go to your local bike shop and ask them for a street tire for your bike. These tires don't have the knobs the off road tires have.

You can get a set of "street slicks" which are 26" tires that fit a mountain bike rim. That will decrease your rolling resistance.

Beyond the street slicks, I would not try to convert a mountain bike to use road bike tires. This is because a mountain bike has a different frame geometry and riding position than a road bike. If you seriously want to ride more comfortably on the road for long distances, I would try a road bike because all of the components are designed for that type of use.
