A fixed Gear/track Bike Question.?
Question:Here is hoping the person that responds knows what im talking about! I have a fixed gear that I have been riding for many years. I moved to Maui Hawaii from Seattle. I live on the side of a Volcano that has some serious hills. Hills that can last for three or four miles. In Seattle I rode a 42/16 cog assembly, and am looking for some advice on a cog set up that might work for me here. Picture a lot of up and downhill stuff. Maybee similar to San Francisco. Except these hills just keep going and going. I want to compromise a bit of speed on a larger cog set up, but also dont want to be happily cruising up a hill with ease either.
Thanks and cheers!

I outfitted a guy for the Stelvio's - Back when Compact Cranks first hit the market. He went to France with two wheelsets and on them he had a 11~23 and a 12~27. When he got to the Stelvio's he used everybit of the 27 tooth in the back while working the 34 tooth up front.
From this point, it's easy to see just how much gear you'll need. I would try to get it done with a 39x18 I think that would be an easy gear combo to get ahold of and still have some speed on the road... but, not a whole lot of it.

Why is it very hard to balance on a bike when it is stationary but easy when it is moving along?
go smaller in the front. apparently the 42 is too much. unless, of course, you can find something larger for the rear instead.i can't give you an exact measurement since I don't know how many "gear inches" you would prefer to be pushing.
sheldon brown's page will give you various options with regards to "gear inches"

Go see Sheldon! How can I get into mountain biking?
Did you know that a Nexus 8 powers off in 5th gear? And then it is a true single speed (using only the 1 external cog), but not a fixed gear. With such a huge amount of spokes, WheelSmith XL14 will make a nice light build.
The smooth bearings, "Ultegra" version is called Nexus 8 Premium or "Redline" and has a red stripe on it.
Use a 20t cog, your current chainring and a 7 or 8 speed chain. To cause it to fit, you may need to change the front chainring up or down one size.
See Sheldon Brown's site at www.harriscyclery.com.
Set it to 5 (OFF) for single speed, crank it up to go really fast, or turn it down when you're about to bonk.
Velocity Areohead rims (NOT OFFSET!--just the plain little pointy rim) comes to mind along with Wheelsmith XL14 to go with the Nexus 8 Premium hub.
For a single speed that really rocks through the hills.
