A few friends are arguing...?

Question:about how fast a ten speed bike will go. One says 20mph the other says up to 35mph. I think they're both a bit optimistic. Does anyone know?

Answers:

In San Francisco, where's the best place for cyclists to live so you have easy access to group rides?

Professional cyclists reach 40mph on sprint finishes. They may average 25-30mph for an entire stage of a race. For a ride of duration, good amateur cyclists can average 25mph in a group, and comfortably 20mph by themselves.

You said they have backpacks also? You're right, both are being optimistic. Plus you said they have standard 10-speed bicycles, probably not bikes designed for racing. An educated guess would put their average speed for the road trip near 15mph, so an average of 4 minutes for every mile they ride.

I am going to buy a new bike.which one is better?

wouldn;t it depend on the person peddling? Also - I'm sure going down hill would help

For a 14 year old, is a 5:52 mile any good? Or is it below average, or just average? Thanks.?

Someone going downhill could potentially reach 40mph or more if the hill was long enough and they were in a good aerodynamic position. (my personal high speed is 42mph- scary!) Cruising on flat ground they could easily reach 25mph if they were pedaling hard and efficiently.

What is the lighest best fs bike under 1000 dollars?

Professional bike racers (like the Tour de France) average around 27 mph (44 kmh) over daily distances of 130 miles (210 km) ... for approximately 20 days in a row. Peak speeds (on the flat, no wind) may get as high as 40 mph (65 kmh), with downhills in the 65 mph (104 kmh) range.

"Touring" riders, loaded with extra gear like backpacks and tents, are not extremely aerodynamic for one thing - and are nowhere near as fit, for another. A more realistic expectation for a touring-style trip would be in the 15-20 mph range, if the trip was a one-day affair and there were no major hills to climb. If it was a multi-day trip of 60+ miles per day, expect average speeds to be closer to 15 mph than 20.

I ride fully-supported charity courses, and can average 22-24 mph over a 150 mile trip (completed in a single day). However, the next day needs to be less strenuous. Alternatively, I can do several 100-mile days at 18 mph average speed, as long as the climbs cover approximately the same distance as the drops.

Is it scary cycling at night?

When I raced as a semi pro we rode 10 speeds... tells you how old I am.

Anyway, the gear ratios between 10 speeds and 27 speeds have remained very similar, the only difference is that more gears provide more divisions between the gears allowing smoother pedalling.

My top speed ever was 53.2mph going downhill (8% grade over 1 mile), and my top flat speed was 31.9mph over 10 miles.

It's all a matter of math. If you can pedal at a cadence of 120rpm then you will easily be able to reach 30mph with a 52/12 gear ratio.

What tv network will be covering the 2006 Tour de France?

20mph on flat ground is very realistic. Tour de France riders average 25-28 mph over the course of a 5 hour stage. In the sprint for the finish, a rider was clocked at 47mph on flat ground in race just a few weeks ago. Of course, sustained speeds that high are unlikely.

An experienced rider can easily exceed 35mph on a downhill stretch or with a strong tailwind. Pro riders coming down the mountains often exceed 60mph.
