Avg life of a bike?
what is the avg shelf life of a mountain bike? is it a bad idea to buy a 2003 mountain bike, used?
Answers:
If the bike was used as either a free-ride, downhill, trials or jump bike it will more than likely have been severely thrashed if it's more than 2yrs old. All metal has a point where it just gives way and the amount of stress placed on the frame, components, shocks and welds from the abovementioned riding styles drastically shortens the life span of the bike.
General things to look for are any cracks or bubbles or fractures at critical weld points ie head tube, bottom bracket, if those are there walk on by!! If not ask the seller if they've used the bike as a jump, downhill etc. Sometimes you can pick up a bargain as some folks watch extreme biking on tv or vids, reckon thats the go for them, buy a hell expensive bike and find out the hard way it's painful when you eat dirt and promptly sell the bike.
Also look at the chain, cassettes, cranks and the teeth of the spider, if it's pretty smooth, it'll need replacing in the near future. Look at the bike really critically and ask yourself what might need replacing in the future, if it looks expensive it probably is.
Hope that helps.
How can I stop my A*s from hurting so much on a bike??
i had a bike and it lated 15 years but i didn,t do jumps i only road it on the road.Is a Jamis Ranger SX good for downhill racing? i have a Jamis Dakar also.?
no, you can buy that bikejust look it over and if the brakes work, wheels spin straight, and the chain looks good you should be fine
that bike probally has another 5-10 years left
Depends.
If it's a regular aluminum frame, their life span is a few years, maybe more. I'm sure it's pretty good.
I think steel is better, but I could be wrong. Well Cromoly steel I mean.
