i dont like seeing very young children playing contact sport. some start at five years old and i think that is too young. 10 years old is probably the safest age and make sure they have protective gear on like helmets and mouth guards.What is wayne bennets winning percentage for the broncos?
Teaching children hand-eye coordination as young as you can is a good idea. It will help them with all sorts of life skills.Balance is also a idea to teach them as it is part of gross motor skills that are taught in their early years.
Don't teach them any of the contact skills as this is dangerous and unnecessary.

5 or 6 is ok but they are never to old to learn either.The first year of footy is really about catching and passing, so if you can throw the ball from 2 metres away and he/she can catch it then pass it back he's/she's on his/her way.
