What happens if there is a draw in the AFL finals?
I thought about this after the close grand final yesterday. Also has this ever happened before?

If it was a draw it would go into extra-time the last time it happened was i think the 1977 GF or around that time it was played the following week then Nth Melb d Collingwood but that's now changed i think they play extra-time until there is a winnerovertime

In the all the finals they play two halves of extra time (5 min each way) but if the grandfinal is a draw then they relpay the entire match the following week. In all finals except the Grand Final, a drawn match will go to extra time - two five-minute halves. This rule was only brought in recently in the last ten years or so. Before that the match was replayed.If a Grand Final is drawn (as it was in 1948 between Essendon and Melbourne and in 1977 between North Melbourne and Collingwood) then it is replayed the following week.

Ask any AFL commentators and official and they will tell you this :if a Final other than a grandfinal is drawn then overtime will be played but if a GRAND FINAL is a draw then everybody have to come back to the MCG and replay the ENTIRE game AGAIN.
Its always discussed what happens when a grand final is drawn but it should be clear that in a grand final there is no extra time. If it was a preliminary, qualifying, elimination or semi final there would be two periods of five minutes which would be considered as extra time but if there is still no result they keep on adding five minutes. In the grand final they replay the match the next week if it is drawn and they play the week after if the replay was drawn again and so on. They would keep on replaying the matches until they got a result. You could be having a grand final during Melbourne cup week. Of course there have not been any draws in the grand finals in the recent years but in Saturday the swans and eagles came very close. For draws in the home and away season they just keep the score as a draw with no extra time and both teams are awarded with 2 points.
ONLY in the Grand Final they play the following week (a proper full game), this applies to all leagues of football.
