5 yellow cards in the premiership question?

Question:im sure i heard on sky sports today that five yellow cards does not mean an automatic one game ban for the remainder of the season. am i right and if so how is this fair when one player could miss a big game like chelsea v man u but towards the end of season another player may not get the same punishment?
