How come football goalkeepers can now wear short sleeved shirts? I thought this used to be against the rules?

Just actually checked the rules on the FA Website and the only stipulation for a goalkeeper is that he must wear a different colour jersey from either team or the officials to distinguish himself. Nothing related to short or long sleeves, or in fact rolling them up and nothing to say this falls foul of any regulation and therefore a bookable offence either.
That's the first I've heard about that being against the rules. I think it has more to with preference. In the past the long sleeved shirts always had padding around the elbows for protection. I suppose some Goalkeepers feel that they don't need that protection.

It's never been against the rules, where did you get that from? It's just a fashion thing that came up, they want to impress by showing: Hey, I don't need any protection to catch your lousy shots. But in fact it's just that international lawns are that soft and good today, they just don't need it anymore.Personally I still prefer long sleeves even when playing on soft pitches. Therefore I prefer short sleeves even in winter when playing as "normal" defender.
