why do golf balls have little dents all around , and what are they made of ?

They travel further and straighter with dimples, more aerodynamic.They are now made of solid latex type plastic but I remember when they were a ball of elastic rubber bands inside with a ball containing liquid rubber in the middle.It was fun to cut the bands to see them unravel, dogs had a field day playing with them.I'm showing my age now.
