Playing lots and lots of golf, lessons to shave strokes and the desire to be the best will drive you along the way. If you are that dang good, then people notice you and good things will happen.

If you're talking tour golf, practice and play.

If, on the other hand you're talking about becoming a Professional Golfers Association of America member then go to www.pgalinks.com and get some information. What you'll need to do is being work at a PGA recoginized facility (basically and range, course or retial golf shop) and enter "the program" as an apprentice. There are 3 levels, each with books to study and tests to take. The costs of the PGA program are exorbitant. At the end of each level you have to go to PGA school in Florida for a week long seminar and testing. Keep in mind that this is all book work, from rules, to club fitting, hosting tournaments, merchandising, tee sheet management, etc. You will also learn the ins and outs of teaching, particularly to juniors and women.

You'll also be required to pass the Playing Ability Test (the PAT) The requirements for this have changed but basically you have to show your competency with clubs. How are you going to teach if you can't break 80? That sort of thing. All in all it's about a 3 year process (depending on your determination) though some folks have knocked all 3 levels out in less then 2 years.

Class A PGA pros that I've talked to have indicated that now that the program is so expensive AND courses are hiring less PGA pros and more MBAs to run the business side of golf, they wouldn't do it (get certified.) If you want to, go for it. Golf needs GOLF pros to keep the sport going.

Good luck!
