It is very important to know your swing, The use of club is a very personal, I use 9 iron to go upto 80 yards. You have lot of books which tell you when to use a driver, Wood or irons. You need to go to the range and bring your whole bag. Chart the distance that you hit with each club. As an example, I'll use a sand wedge for anything under 120 yards, a gap wedge 0r a pitching wedge from 120-130 depending on how soft I need it to land. I hardly ever use a 3 iron as I'm more accurate with a 7 wood, I use a 3 wood for distances greater than 210. Utility shots need to be learned, the best utility club is usually a 7 iron. If you under a tree and need to advance the ball but keep it low, place the ball behind you to "hood" the club...your swing is now more like a hockey shot but you can advance the ball 100 yard and keep it low to avoid branches, etc. You can also use a 7 to run a ball up onto the green from just about any distance by controlling the distance of your back swing...aim for a spot well before the hole and let it run. Well, in your irons, the higher the number, the shorter you will hit it. The same for your woods. Learning the distance you hit them takes time and actually playing some. I would suggest going to a driving range and hitting each club. That will give you an idea of how far you hit each one.Try them in driving range and find your distant, everyone tend to have different distant out of the same club. Tiger Woods can hit pitching wage up to 190 yards from tough lie. I hit 120 yards from the tee. If you don't know what to use, beginner, use seven iron or five iron all the way. I used to do that on my first round, got me through.
