well if you assume that the ball is your own ball, then play a sand shot on the green only to learn that it is not in fact your ball, but dont be alarmed you are safe. there is no penalty, providing you do not continue the play that ball. what u gotta do isresume your search in the sand and try to fine you ball. if you fail to find it within 5 minutes then u must treat it as a lost ball and proceed to the next rule that is applicable to lost balls

I'm not 100% on the ruling as I haven't looked at it recently, but if you play the wrong ball, i think it is a 2 stroke penalty and you play your ball. If you can't find it, then treat it as a lost ball and go back and replay your stroke with the lost ball penalty too.

Why is a golf course called links?

If you play your partners ball it is a 2 stroke penalty, then you play your own. If you play a random ball then i don't know what the ruling would be.
