When should a golfer switch from a cavity back iron to a blade?
I would like to know what skill level I should be at to switch.

You don't even HAVE to switch, some pros still hit cavity backs, but if you just think you must you need to be a 3 or 4 handicap at worst.I think if you want to improve your level of play you can switch whenever you want. Blades have a smaller sweet spot, which will tell you when you are making good contact with the ball. I think you could play blades from your 6 iron down, but anything 5 iron trough 2 iron should be a cavity back or hybrid. Plus, you look cool with blades in the bag, even if your shooting 100.
How do you play a 4 ball tournament? And how many people are involved?
It's really your preference and what you are comforable with. In agreement with the earlier answer, I actually saw one pro using a set of Ping Zings at the Bay Hill Tournament.Cavity backs are played because they move the weight of the club to the perimeter, making a larger "sweet spot" and thus are more forgiving on off-center hits. The trade-off is feel. A blade or muscle back forged iron has better feel for a shot that is struck on center.
Therefore, a player may consider switching to a blade when they can consistently strike the ball on the sweet spot and want better feedback from the club. But I think it boils down to what you are most comforable with as you stand over the ball.

My advice to you is, if you grew up playing with cavity backs.then keep playing with cavity back style irons.switching to blades will be totally foreign to you and probably will not be a happy experience!More Questions & Answers...
