You could go to the local ice rink and find some kid who has grown out of his gear.

Perhaps you could buy him some second-hand gear on E-bay. Or, if you contact the club he would join, they might be able to recommend a way to get second-hand gear.

Go for it, my son also took an early interest in it and by the age of 10 years had his 5 badges neccessary to become a coach so now 10 years later he is officially recognised as an international coach.

Will the Flyers bounce back next season?

I'm not sure that a five year old should be skating round in full pads playing ice hockey. Surely there are safe ways for children to learn the sport: non-contact with a lightweight puck.

The most important thing is to really make sure your grandson is a competent ice-skater. As before, go to your local ice rink and check it all out there.

Where does hockey originate?

Go to a sports shop or the ice rink & ask if they know of anyone who can sponsor your son.

if you go to peter borough ice hockey club and explain the circumstances, you probably find out that thy will have spare kit for your grandson to try at practises .and if he likes it you can buy a piece of kit each week untill he has a full kit of his own.Thats what i did for my son.P.S. am a ex british ice hockey champion with Ayr Bruins

Does anyone know how to watch the Versus channel playoff hockey games in HD?

Its a cool sport for him to be starting! If you really cant get anything in your price range locally, you might want to see if you can ship over some equipment from Canada or the US (maybe on e-bay as well), it might be allot cheaper as many more people play it there. There aren't to many people who play hockey in the UK.

I wouldn't advice getting ALL of the equipment now, because he is going to grow allot and also, he might change his mind about which sport to play.Just get him skating really well first.

What would u do?

Many minor hockey associations organize a "swap shop" event at the start of the season where players new and old can exchange, trade, barter or purchase used equipment. Check with your local association. No doubt once you get involved and get to know more people within the association you will find many options to keep your grandson equipped for years without going broke. For kids his age as well, you can usually get a starter set from Canadian Tire for somewhere in the $50 range which includes everything but skates and a helmet.

As for the person worried about him getting hurt playing so young.I would say that is a virtual non issue. At that age, no one is moving fast enough to create any serious impact and hockey is non-checking until older levels. Here in Nova Scotia, that means Pee Wee (ages 11-12).

Have fun.

Usually during sign ups ( at least around here) They have a sale with alot of used equipment that people's sons and daughters have grown out of. Check the ads or contact your local minor hockey representative to see.
