"Rich White Boys' Sport"? Do you agree??
Question:Our mayor will not put an ice rink in Memphis because hockey is a rich white boys' sport. (that is a direct quote from the mayor himself) Do you agree?? Why or why not?
Want to know what I think?

Does the nhl have a chart like the ncaa does for the playoffs/finals?
No way! I'm a poor white chick, and I love hockey! Your mayor should learn that it's a sport with violence, and lots of people from all walks of life enjoy that part!!Sidney Crosby vs Wayne Gretzgey?
what an A**HOLE!!I he racist or something because everyone should be allowed to play!
Who was the last goaltender to play without a mask and what team did he play for?
That's not true! Everyone plays hockey!Even if it was, he should take the liberty of removing this title from it.
I'm all of the above. Well, my parents are rich, I just live off my trust fund.
How much is a Gretzky card worth?
No way! I mean I am white, but it is stupid to say any sport is just for a certain race. There may not be very many non-white hockey players in the NHL, but the ones that do play are great at what they do. Look at Jerome Iginla, he's not white, and he is amazing. And Georges Laraque, he may not be a bigtime goal scorer, but he is a major inforcer. His team mates know that he has their backs. And don't forget about Grant Fuhr, he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.I am a steadily broke white boy, who lives paycheck to paycheck, but I still play. I cant imagine alot of people in Memphis are into hockey. I spent a couple weeks there in 2001, and hockey didnt seem to be on anyones mind. Thats just my thought. But, without saying, the mayor is still a tool.
A Question about My Wallpaper?
Sounds like your redneck mayor is just that. I disagree with him. Hockey has been bestowed in your state of Tennessee since the Predators joined the NHL. They have a good team this year, and a real chance to do damage in the play-offs. The interest in hockey will only increase since Nashville has a professional hockey team. The fact that he labeled it a, "rich white boys' sport" is a racist comment. If he had said a different remark regarding another sport and the African-American race, I guarantee you he would be on the front page of every newspaper in America. If he doesn't want a rink in Memphis, then show him how much interest, if any, exists for the sport of hockey by organizing a petition or showing him proof of substantial interest for ice hockey. Ask him how the Memphis Grizzlies are doing in the NBA? Tell me the introduction of an ice arena for amateur, youth players is a worse idea. It isn't. The mayor is a redneck asshole, who should keep his one dimensional, opinionated comments to himself and out of the public ear. Having a hockey rink will give more jobs to the citizens, make money by having amateur hockey teams, public skating, and only increase the enjoyment of the sport to an area it may not be too popular.Yes, I'm sure all of those Canadian boys growing up on farms in the middle of nowhere are rich. Dedicated? yes. Rich? no.
Your mayor needs to do some research. What if I were to say your Memphis Grizzlies and Basketball in general is a poor black man's sport?!?!
Whatever.
Go Bolts!
What's a fun NHL hockey team to watch? and why?
must be related to imusPredictions on the Wings vs. Sharks series?
It is true that hockey is expensive to manage rink and whole equipment, i remember when i grew up and play hockey. Thanks to the city sponsorship we have a place to play and some old equipment to play with. You might say that more about tennis or golf.Sounds like your mayor is pretty "uneducated" (I'd use a stronger word if Y!A would let me get away with it) and Hockey has an image problem despite how many people around here deny it.
I suppose there is some truth to the "rich" part although if you REALLY want to do something, like play Hockey, you find a way.
Obviously your mayor has never heard of Grant Fuhr, Jarome Iginla, Anson Carter, etc.
And yes I DO want to know what you think. Just don't get a violation....
rich white boy sport, this guy said this and it got no press coverage. what if he said, we are not putting in a basketball court because it is a poor black boy sport. the media would have been all over him. My brothers and I used to shovel off the pond, put on the skates and tie big magazines around our shins and played, if a rich white boy consists of someone that can afford some skates, stick, and shovel then I hope there are not to many poor white folks in this country.
I'm a middle-class black guy, and I'm heading off to the rink to play as soon as I finish this message. That mayor sounds like an idiot. Memphis is a fun town, obviously he has nothing to do with that fact. Besides, they can use the FedEx Forum for hockey, it's not like the Grizzles are selling out any crowds. If I wanted to see something sleep at home and get killed on the road, I'd watch a documentary on possums.
your mayor sounds like a real card
Predator Fans.. I'm so Sorry!?
What a jerk. What's worse is no one probably said much about it. But I bet if he said no to a basketball court because it was a "poor black man's sport" they media would vilify him![satire ON]
As a white man in America, Mr. Herenton's comments have hurt me on a personal level. On behalf of all white people, I demand that he be removed from office IMMEDIATELY! We simply cannot tolerate such divisive and hateful rhetoric!
[satire OFF]
Sound familiar? Or just plain stupid?
If Mr. Herenton has a problem with blacks being less sucessful (read: RICH) than whites, he should do what he can to motivate the young black men in his comunity to get an education and pursue worthwhile goals in their life, besides pimpin' and gangbangin'.
After that, he should address the young black women and tell them to respect themselves and replace the hoochie-wear with clothing fit for women, learn how to tell a playa "no", and to get an education for themselves, lest they resort to becoming "nappy-headed ho" whoring themselves on CL to support their 5 babies.
In the meantime, Mr. Herenton can kiss my lily-white butt.
Should the flames backup goalie be suspended for the cheap shot on Franzen?
I wouldn't word it that way...In order to play competitive ice hockey... the kid's parents need to have funds.. It isn't cheap.. equipment (good equipment) is extremely expensive and so is enrollment onto a hockey team... I live in Canada, where hockey is IT ... and if you want to compete with a possibility of playing pro... well... your' parents have to dish out the cash... That's just the way it is.
What does everyone think about Brett Hull commentating...?
Is Memphis so much different than Nashville? It looked like a lot of people were enjoying Playoff Hockey in Music City tonight!I've played hockey my whole life & it doesn't hurt to have a few bucks to buy state of the art equipment, but with plenty of used gear available on-line, lack of money shouldn't keep anyone off the ice.
Maybe there is some truth in what he says, Hockey skates and equipment are expensive for a kid to start off...so many kids play other sports such as basket ball, where at a junior level all they need are their shoes. Im not saying I agree or anything, just having a daughter who plays, I know how expensive it is, I have enough trouble trying to afford and find second hand equipment....some people would find it impossible to afford.
How often do NHL players get paid? Weekly, Monthly, Biweekly, Etc.?
I somewhat agree, even though that was a very unpolitically correct way of stating it.i feel anyone can enjoy and play the game...however ice hockey is a very expensive sport and in order to play at a competetive level you need to have money. i played several years of travel hockey and the cost just to play on the team for a season was roughly $1,000 (ice time, jerseys, league fees cost money) and i was a goalie which is the more expensive position for equipment but i would estimate my equipment combined to be over $2,000
i guess what im saying is if you dont have the money you cand afford to play ice hockey
Is Ottawa that good, or Buffalo that bad?
first off, i dissagree with your direct rich white boy target. i have personally seen more and more different type of races and players of various ethnic backgrouns playing the game of hockey nowadays. another thing is that i would rather make the effort of getting a young child into hockey than have the kid planted in front of the television playing video games or just plain watching t.v. shows and movies on a constant daily basis. the sport of hockey keeps your mind stimulated and body in physical shape. the other good aspect of playing hockey is that the players spend time practicing and training instead of loafing around and risking a chance of getting in a street gang, turning to drugs and alcohol, commiting crimes or just plain getting into trouble. another positive aspect of building an arena is the arena can be used for baketball games and other sports like arena football or indoor soccer, shows, and other types of entertaing venues. and all of these sporting games and spectacle attractions attract tourists and therefore will help out your cities economy. it is a fact that in canada we are supportive groupwise to help out poor areas in the country by either raising funds, or donating hockey equipement to the less fortunate comunities all accross the country. some towns and cities revolve around the game of hockey and it is this great sport that keeps the comunities together. Why is the govt silent on seeing the decline in hockey and not taken any step to cleanse IHF?
Your mayor needs to be cross-checked.Plenty of people other than rich white boys play the sport.Maybe back in the day, but now there are a number of premier black players. All the stereotypes ahould be gone. Jarome Iginlia and Ray Emery are great. Anson Carter had a bad season, but is a very good player. Mike Grier is one of the most underappreciated players in hockey, and the two toughest fighters in the league ( Brashear & Laraque) are black. The bruisers matter too.
I need info on "crashed ice" in Quebec?
Ask Kevin Weekes, Anson Carter, Georges Laraque, Ray Emery, etc etc etcSee what they say.
What incentive were there to be with a New Jersey victory tommorrow against Islanders?
no, this is the biggest load of crap i've ever heard. colombus had a star named Manny Malhotra, drafted first round in 1998 7th overall pick, Ray Emery drafted in 2001 4th round pick 9th overall by the Sens, and he is leading them on track to beat Pitt first round this year. Was a player permanently screening the goaltender the intention of the rule changes?
Hell no. The equipment might cost alot, but it is not a rich mans sport. Is your mayor on crack. In Canada almost every young child plays hockey, and knows how to skate and hold a stick. That sounds pretty racist to me. Youre mayor is a piece of crap. Think about it...If some Mayor somewhere was like "You cant build basketball courts in town here. All the poor dirty black kids would congregate and bring property value down." everyone would be up in arms. Racism works both ways and he needs to lose his job. Not to mention theres some damn good black hockey players. Iginla, Weeks, and Brashear to name 3 black players at 3 different positions on the ice. What an idiot.
