Why do you think it's called the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy?

Howie Morenz died of complications from an injury sustained on the ice.

Both Clint Malarchuk and Gordie Howe (very early in his NHL career) are among those who came far too close.

Who would you rather buld your team around?

actually bill masterson died from an on ice hit in 68 for the minnesota north stars
his death is considered the first and only death in an nhl game
but in europe a few years back sergei zholtok of the minnesota wild died on ice from some kind of heart failure kind of like jiri fischer's

Does anyone know if Jamie McLennan of the Calgary Flames has a girlfriend or is involved with anyone?

Bill Masterson did not, apparently, die on ice. He died as a result of brain damage when his head hit the ice. While he received the injury that led to his death on the ice, he didn't die on the ice.

If the question is extended to include people who ultimately died because of injuries sustained while on the ice, then you should toss in Howie Morenz, who died as a result of complications suffered when he broke his leg in an on-ice injury.

Apparently there are 2-3 deaths every year in amateur leagues from a condition called commotio cordis, where a puck or something with a lot of energy hits the thorax at just the right time which can induce arrhythmia leading to heart failure. I believe there is/was a case of a career NHL minor-leaguer who played in Italy and hit an Italian player in the chest which induced commotio cordis, causing the player to crumple up and die not shortly after on the ice.

Clint Malerchuch didnt die but he almost did his throat got cut by another players skate he was a goalie for the Buffalo Sabres it happened in the 1989 season i think it was in March and they were playing against St Louis at the time

Why do so many Sabre fans like Miller when he lets in 4 goals every playoff game?

It's also tough to say if a player died from injuries. Vezina died 2 months after collapsing in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates back in the mid-20s. Does that count? Some would say yes some would say no. I think what some have mentioned, on the ice, would be the determining factor. The one Minnesota Player dieing really wouldn't count either because he died of heart failure not an on-ice injury.

Will Forsberg be out of Philadelphia?

Howie Morenz and Bill Masterton both died as a direct result of on-ice injuries, but they didn't actually die on the ice.

Former Minnesota Moose and NHL player Stephane Morin also died of heart failure on the ice while playing in Germany.

Do you think the leafs will continue their winning streak?

Bill Masterton of the Minnesota North Stars didnt die on the ice but did die of injuries he sustained when he was bodychecked and hit his head on the ice in the late 60s or early 70s I believe. The NHL has an award named after him The Masterton Trophy for dedication, perserverance towards hockey.
