A Hockey faux pas?
Question:I had a discussion with a buddy of mine not too long ago, in which he claimed that if you have a crested jersey, and the player who's name/number is on said jersey gets traded, you should "retire" (read: throw away) the jersey because "it's bad form to wear a team's jersey for a player who's not on that team anymore".
It seems a bit snobbish to me, personally... but what do you guys think? Should you still keep it, and wear it, or toss that $150 jersey in the garbage?

Anyone notice how Jersey's attempt at trash talk reflects their fan base?
Having a jersey from your team of a player who was on the team long ago only shows that you've been a true fan through the years.Especially with sports today, trading, free agency, etc. Having the same guy play for the same team his whole career happens very seldom.
I wish I had some of the older jerseys of the players that played for the Sharks in their first few years in the early 90's.
Saying that your buddy is snobbish is an understatement. However, like myself, he's may be a very superstitious fan.
It is a sin to wear a jersey of a former player if you are watching a game in which that player is currently playing against your team. Then you need to turn it inside out, stand on your head and repeat a chant each time he is on the ice if you want your team to win.......maybe it's the superstitious part that's an understatement.
GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!...
I completely disagree with your friend. I wouldn't throw a way a good hcokey jersey. I liek to keep the jerseys of past players or traded players because they are collectibles and I hate throwign otu sports stuff
Can you give me 3 NHL hockey teams that will win there game this week?
For $150 it's not "bad form". I'd keep it, and wear it!Yeah, I think your friend is full of it. Keeping the jersey shows that you have been a faithful fan, back to the days that player was still on the team. Especially if you wear the faded, worn jersey to a game.
Oh and I think it is a faux pas to use the term faux pas and hockey together... ;-)
Why was Wayne Gretzky's jersey retired throughout the whole league?
You should only keep it if it is a Bernie Federko or Zarley Zalapski jersey.Did I hear Ray Ferraro say that the only thing going for the Red Wings is the schedule?
KEEP IT DUDE!Oh yeah definitely keep that sucker. You normally get a jersey because the person is your favorite player... that doesn't change just because they get traded. They can still be your favorite and you can still represent for the team, regardless of who is on the back.
Will the Montreal Canadians make the playoffs? If so to what round?
you keep the jersey, for instance at colorado avalanche games you still see tons of forsberg , and foote jerseys, it just means that you were a fan back when. i think you "buddy"just wants to steal your jersey don't listen to them! The Sedin brothers play pro hockey - are there any other twins that are in professional sports?
LOLAnd then you see him digging through your trash to scoop your discard.
Did the leafs have it coming to them?
I would think you'd only buy a jersey if you really like the player, so does that change if he gets traded away? You may not root for his team, but you still root for his success. If the player contributed well to your team when he was on it, there's no shame in wearing it for years to come, even if they play for a rival (I see plenty of Ranger fans still sporting Kovalev jerseys, and I still love the guy and wish him success). For me though, the jerseys I've gotten (for hockey and football, the two sports I care most about) have always been players that "bleed" that team...I wore my Messier jersey for the past 14 years until I bought a Lundqvist jersey earlier in the year, and I know Lundqvist will be with the team for a long time, so I have no worries there. I'd never buy a jersey for someone who's up for free agency the next year, but that's just me...I like to know the player is "on my side" for the long haul.
Are the Avalanche out of the playoff hunt?
Umm, sounds like a really good ebay scheme.1) Wait for somebody to get traded, say Brodeur gets traded after a heated dispute with the Devils.
2) Buy his jersey on ebay for about eight bucks and a box of cracker jacks.
3) Hold onto the jersey for about 15 years until he retires and get to the hall of fame. You now have a jersey that's probably worth a lot of money!! It's rare and he's famous.
I doubt it would work as well as I'm making it out to work, but heck, it's worth a shot.
Who thinks that Sidney Crosby is the BEST looking player in the NHL.??
You should keep it. It shows you're a real fan of the team, no matter what. As an Islander fan, I could have had an All Star team of jerseys from the players who have passed through here - Bertuzzi, Luongo, Chara, Hamrlik, Connolly, Redden, Jokinen, Peca, Zhitnik, Kasparaitis, Aucoin, Schneider, Linden, McCabe, Berard, etc, etc.Does Any One Else Find The Sean Hill Thing Humorous?
For as much money as you put out for even a replica, I see no need to retire a jersey. I still have, and still wear, Derian Hatcher and Ed Belfour Stars jerseys. They were very important parts of the best years of my favorite team. Showing respect for the past is an outstanding way of expressing your loyalty to a team. I can't imagine what the Joe Louis arena would look like with out Howe, Yzerman, or Fedorov jerseys floating around.Ottawa and Buffalo fans: how nervous are you?
I am not going to throw away my $200 Roberto Luongo jersey just because he is no longer on the Florida Panthers. Istead I will buy another Roberto Luongo jersey but this time it will be a Canucks one. Then I can just start a collection. Lol.Has a player ever gone -1 goals scored in a season before?
A real fan would wear a hockey jersey...regardless...Let's Go Pens!
