Retroactive Injured Reserve?

When a players is put on injured reserve retroactive from a certain date, how far back can he be put on? Is it the day after the last game he played?

Best NHL goal in the past 10 years was what and why?

It really shouldn't matter if it is retro or not, it is not like a baseball 15 or 60 day DL. A player just has to be out a minimum of 7 days to qualify to come back (7 days from the date of the injury) I guess it could matter if say the Isles put Dipietro on the IR today-he couldn't compete until 7 days after his injury. If they put someone on the IR, it opens a roster spot too.
For the long term, it is the amount of time you mention and is retroactive. It is a move to clear of salary cap space I am pretty sure. Are you looking at a paticular player??
