As stated earlier, a saber is a sword. However, the saber was traditionally a single-edged curved weapon, well-suited for use on horseback and delivering long slashing cuts while riding down infantry.
However, over the years the saber straightened as the use of bladed weapons in warfare fell by the wayside and now the only kind that is still commonly seen are the ceremonial straight blades worn by officers on parades.
In terms of weight, they were surprisingly heavy, comparable in weight to the so-called "one-handed longsword" (A longsword is actually what most people would call a bastard sword, meant for use in both hands but useable in only one). It's weight distribution, though, is different which can give an impression of being lighter due to a blade that was generally thicker due to its single edge. It is not faster than a one-handed straight blade, and unlike a straight blade of comparable length and weight it is less effective at delivering thrusts but can land deeper slashing cuts following a percussive one due to the curve of the blade whereas a straight blade is better suited to percussive cuts.

a sabre is a type of sword that is curved and manly used for slashing, cavalry sabres are long and heavy at the end for the rider to hack down towards infantryA sabre IS a sword. It has a curved, relatively light, thin blade, and may or may not have a handguard. The main difference in technique between a sabre and a one-handed longsword is that the sabre is much faster, but less powerful because there is less weight.
