They work by bending your arm in a direction that it's not supposed to bend in. The straight armbar, for example, works by hyperextending the elbow joint. If the hold isn't broken or is applied with too much force, the elbow can snap.

I am 5'2", 100 lbs and work in a busy downtown area.?

have you ever heard of Shear Force in Science?

Well one thing goes one way, one goes the other, and it breaks.

Much like scissors that cut, or ripping a piece of paper.

You are doing the same here, arm goes one way, body goes other, if you do it hard enough it would break, or dislocate your arm.

Who is BJ Penn telling to leave in the preview of the next episode of Ultimate Fighter?

There are different ways to apply an armlock, but usually the person applying the armlock will control their opponent's arm, and then will apply pressure on the elbow by pulling and controlling the arm and letting their hips lift up into the elbow.

In short, it hyperextends the elbow in a very bad direction. If your elbow does not snap first, then your arm will surely break.

Do this and you will see.

With your left hand straight out in front of you and your palm up,

grab it with your other hand at the wrist, thumb at the base of your hand,

now bend it toward you as far as you can.

Does anyone know of any Dojos that specialize in the teaching of Xing Yi Quan. Preferably in the LA area?

What's not to get? Bend your elbow... Ok, now imagine someone forcing it to bend, THE OTHER WAY.

Yeah if your whole elbow joint doesn't tear apart, then your bones will break. You get it now? Try having someone do it to you, well before it breaks there is a very unique feeling.

How do I get over the performance gitters?

Your arm was only ment to bend one way.. So if you are trying to bend it the opposite way it doesnt suppose to then it will break that bone and you'll be sad lol...

Can you please give me a website which shows how martial arts is and I would love if the website have pictures

It works by manpulating the joints in the direction they were not meant to go. The tension put on the ligaments and tendons causes tremendous pain. The cool thing is that when you "lock" the arm it is very hard to get out of without damage to the arm. Once the joint is "unlocked" the pain will go away very quickly. This is why it is a very effective technique.

What's a good martial arts studio in Santa Monica California?

Basically it bends it in a direction it wasn't normally made to go. I actually first saw a guy using it in pro-wrestling. A couple of other wrestling holds such as the boston crab and figure four leg lock work pretty good in real life too. Freaks out the guys who give you crap saying wrestling is fake. Slap one of those on and they'll hollar to everyone in sight that they wear pink women's panties to get you to take it off.
