Ask your instructor about the eye contact thing, it depends on your style. In any case, the reason for keeping eye contact has NOTHING to do with your gi.Who cares if they're looking down your gi? Yes. Eye contact is custom, and comes from not taking your eyes off your opponent. As far as someone looking down your ghi... I wouldn't worry about it.I didn't think you had too. I always though, not sure about your opponent, that that you should bow lower than your master, so I really didn't think that you were supposed too.

Unfortunately, it seems that the majority are in the wrong on this one. What you need to realize is that bowing is a sign of respect and humility. Many of the answerers here seem to have seen "Enter the Dragon" a few too many times, not that I can blame them. However, Bruce Lee was making a philosophical point of constant martial awareness, not etiquette.
In reality, keeping the true purpose of bowing in mind, you must realize that to eyeball your opponent would indicate a lack of trust, and as a result, respect. Otherwise, why bow at all? If you distrust the person you are bowing to so much that you feel you cannot take your eyes off of them, then this act of humility becomes a mere facade.
I think what is tripping people up here is the word opponent. If by opponent, you mean training partner, then it is crucial to show this respect and humility. However, if it is a true martial opponent, why take the time to bow? A true martial opponent is someone you feel threatens you or loved ones, is it not? If engaged in a true defense situation, you are too busy defending oneself to bow to them. Even if you could, would you? After all, at that point, they are common thugs engaged in violent behavior and not worthy of respect.
What martial arts are the best?
I agree with what 'Gregory' above me pointed out.In wado-ryu karate, we maintain eye-contact when bowing to a kumite partner.
However, in iaido, it is a matter of trust that we don't maintain eye-contact when bowing (standing) or when bowing in 'seiza'.
P.S. I'm not perplexed if someone looks 'down' my gi, as I've nothing to be ashamed off! ; ¬ ))

In a contest, its a respect thing to bow. It is also essential. The ref won't start the fight until you have done this. Now Bruce Lee famously said that you should never take your eyes off your opponent, even when you bow, because of some disrespectful fighters. I keep my eye on him because I want to stay focused and I am already planning my first move and weighing him up at this point. I know he isnt gonna kick me in the face before the ref shouts Hajime ha ha.What are the advantages of doing wushu (kung fu) or tai chi chuan or wing chun?
