How do I overcome being nervous while testing?
Question:This coming up wednesday I have my very first testing, and the instructors will be sitting at a table in front of us while we perform. it will be intimidating.
I only feel comfortable around 2 of the 5 instructors, the other 3 intimidate me a lot esp. this one scary looking/acting instuctor. I was raped back in January so this plays into a lot of me being nervous.
I know I know my moves I always pratice them and my instructors even comment on how I know my stuff but i tend to second guess myself( a lot) when I get nervous (esp. around that one instructor).
I don't want to go to the testing and forget everything, that's what I normally do when I take written tests in other classes.
my girl instructor said she would look for mainly confidence from me personally, would asking a male classmate to be my partner show a lot of confidence? I don't know if I could pull it of unless I was feeling really confident that day but that may be a little much for me to handle.

The best way to overcome being nevrvous is to use breathing excercises. I have studied sports pyschology and being nervous is 100% a mental thing. In order to get rid of being nervous you need to slow down your breathing and heart rate and then you will calm down. When you feel yourself becoming nervous try to breath slower, concentrate on feeling the breaths and you will feel the reaction. Strangely it works as well, I use this when I am in the middle of football games and it works great. In a fight: Is kicking allowed?
Know the material and take deep breaths before the test. I drink a full glass of milk to calm myself before a test.Where can i buy samurai sword in india(andhra)?
you will probably be doing the testing along with others (at the same time)... I had my first testing a few weeks ago, and was nervous as hell... BUT the thing to remember is, this is the first, they'll go easy... Just be careful not to do REALLY stupid things... :DWhere did Martial Arts originate from?
Make sure you get enough sleep the night before. Make sure that you have a decent meal approximately 2 hours before the grading. Drink water (if permitted) during the grading, to keep hydrated.Remember also, that there will probably be other people/kids who are grading with you, so I'm sure that will make you feel better. Your instructor wouldn't put you through this grading if s/he didn't think that you were ready.
I'm sure that you will be fine, we were all in that boat before.
I did my first karate grading when I was 33 years old
What is the order of grading belts in kickboxing?
Hi thereFeel for you on this one!
Firstly don't worry or lose too much sleep over it. The reason we all train is because we enjoy it. So that's how you must treat it. Its not life or death and if you fail you can always give it another bash at a later date. It upset me to read some of the things you mentioned in this post and I'm glad you have managed to find a good female instructor. I'm sure if you ask her she will be able to help boost your confidence and give you some pointers.
Here's a few tips i always use for revising and not just for martial arts.
1. Know your material and try to ask yourself what they be looking for or assessing you on.
2. Try to have a good nights sleep the night before.
3. On the day of the exam never practice or talk to someone else who is sitting the exam about the exam.
4. Don't panic! if you revise it will come back to you on the day
5. When its all over have a trip down to the pub!
Personally as a student i have had the big tests and also been continually assessed. For martial arts the continual assessment is much better. Gradings are just money spinners for some clubs!
Good instructors look for people that show commitment, determination and have a good heart. The spirit of budo has always been the most important part of training. To come this far shows you have the spirit to keep going!
Don't worry you can do it. Enjoy it and have fun.

If a Guy and a Girl of the same weight have a fight with no rules who will win?
I know about this feeing all too well. I am a BB in Tae Kwon Do. I have been through many tests and have given many tests. I will tell you the same thing I tell the students I test. Nervousness is a natural feeling you will get. If you didn't get nervous, I would think something is wrong. But during the test, listen to what the Instructors call out, clear your mind of everything but what they want. Then do it as you have practiced it so many times. But while doing your forms, picture only yourself there. Forget about all others around. There will more than likely be a number of other people. Remember, a teacher wont allow a student to test if he/she is not ready. Work on staying calm, putting your mind solely on whatever it is they call out to do. I am 100% sure you will do fine. As for the one who makes you really nervous, try to pay no attention to that person, especially if they make you feel that bad. Talk to the female instructor about your feelings on that one as well. But don't let it keep you from doing your best. A test is like a tournament, it is perfectly natural and normal to get nervous. Just focus on all your techniques. Asking a male to be your partner could show more confidence, but what will show the most, is you doing your techniques strong, powerful and with awesome stances. Again, I am sure you will do fine. Let me know how it goes. And remember to focus, that is one of a MA's most powerful possessions, FOCUS. paradise_city052000@yahoo.comTwo things I would suggest to you.
First, remember the two "B's".
Be ready.
Be a performer.
Second, "WHEN" you make a mistake, don't let it distract you. Move on and don't let anyone else know that you made it. Usually, the only time someone else (other than the instructor) knows that you made a mistake, it is because you called attention to it yourself.
I want to learn kung fu anybody can tell me any school is in bombay?
I would only add to the suggestions above by addressing the following statement you made, "I only feel comfortable around 2 of the 5 instructors, the other 3 intimidate me a lot... "Can you ask one or two of the three to run you through a mock test before Wednesday? This gives you a chance to raise your comfort level with these particular individuals, so that at the actual test it is nothing you haven't already done..
Help me find the best form of martial arts for my pesonal goals...?
People can tell you to relax, but what good will that do, your still going to be a bundle of nerves. Part of the test is to see how you deal with the nerves. All your instructors know that your going to be nervious, thats part of the test. Being your fist test I'm sure that there is not a lot of expectations. Relax and just do it. I can say with near 100% assuredness that if your instructors didn't think you would pass they wouldn't be testing you. In today's martial arts the business is a major part of the over all art. It is not good business to flunk people in a test. You'll do just fine. Nerves are apart of the overall testing. I'm sure you know what is req. for your test. You know you know it so just go out there and do it. Don't worry about making mistakes, your going to. Again that is expected. It's about correcting the mistakes not about not making them.
the only reason why you would be nervous is because you dont train enough
Matt hughes vs. 200 lb bear in a wrestling match, who wins?
EVERYONE is nervous when testing. You must train your spirit to overcome the nervousness & do what is needed in spite of it. Try to block everything but your Art out of your mind. This especially includes the instructors & the fact that you are testing.Good luck!
Is the forum for martial arts really two different forums that interract strangely?
I agree w/ Paradise. I also instruct and if you weren't ready you wouldn't be asked to test. Know that your instructors have confidence in your skills.I am scare that I didn't give my muscle enough time to heal. Am I going to be weaker now?
First, Welcome to the wonderful world of Martial Arts.Testing is just another class (atleast we believe it to be). I try to teach this to my students. Never works. You have to get your feet wet...you will always seem put under the spotlight even after this test. It's diminishes some as you put your time in on the dojo floor. Experience being the big teacher. The more familiar we are with the surroundings the more calmer we become with the situation or circumstances. Remember, this. A rank test is just a day to shine in the spotlight to show what you have learned from those teachers there watching and grading you. It's a verification of them also. We teachers that act and teach responsibly feel the pressure also when we have you demonstrate our art for us. Remember your training in a lifelong marathon of imperfection being perfection. Rank test day is one day to shine like no other. It validates everything that his been taught and learned by you. Rank is given for the vessel retaining the knowledge and being able to pour it back into the instructor.
Keep being a great vessel.
